January 2016

January is almost a foregone month. Here's what has been going on around K-town. After Christmas we enjoyed a few days of R & R around the house. No phone calls, no emails, no one knocking on the door. Just time to be a family and recover from 2015. Over New Years Eve we had a guest from the US. That was a good time to see Rachel. We went on a long hike with the girls to some castle ruins in Hohenecken. The weather was great and the view was the same. On the 3rd our discipleship program kids came back from their break and we had a slow seminar day with breakfast and teaching on grace in a culture of perfectionism. It was great to have them back in town.

Then it was back to school and the hubbub of life. Anika is on the brink of choosing a school for next year. Next week we'll go to the school of choice and sign her up. Hopefully it works out and she gets in. In other news, Naomi is reading now! That didn't take long. We've been really happy with her teacher this year. Every day Naomi talks about her teacher and what went down at school. She's not finding tight friends as quickly as she would like though. That will come. Madeline is growing quickly and in March she will be five. I can hardly believe it. She's our clown in the family and she knows it. Roberta is making sure everything runs smoothly. She's the mother of the year, wife of my life, and an awesome woman all-around. She has my back at every turn and I'm proud to be married to her. I love her so much. Thanks babe.

For church we have been going over some principles of the Kingdom of God. What Jesus had to say about it and how it's totally different than what we might expect of a king or kingdom. After this we'll slowly work our way through the sermon on the mount; the teaching of life in the Kingdom. We also had a week of prayer the second week in January. The evangelical free (non-state) churches organize a week of meetings to pray for the city. I really like being a part of this. The colorful, multi-lingual, multi-generational church comes together to communally ask the Father for grace. It's a beautiful thing.

For FSJ, our live-in discipleship program, we have also been going through a prayer unit. On Monday we finished our seminars on intercessory prayer (praying for others). It was a time of deep learning and discovery. There were so many questions and discussions about prayer that I can't even list the number of questions. I really enjoyed this time with them. I love to be a part of an 'a-ha' moment.

So, I'm off. In twenty minutes there is an international cafe that opens around the corner welcoming people from around the world. There have been 50+ people there over the last few times it's been open. I love going to meet new faces from Syria, Iran, Tunisia, Canada, France, and even Germany. It's the face of heaven.

peace and love,
Mike
